Semantic Services in Mobile Environments

Bilateral research effort in collaboration with NTT DoCoMo Euro-Labs

 Project Description

The vision of a mobile Web in which the computing environment will be composed of various devices that are carried by different users as they go through their daily routine might soon become a reality. In this context, Web services and the Semantic Web are already recognized as important building blocks. In order to keep this increasing amount of (mobile) services manageable, it is essential that users are supported in the discovery and selection of services they personally need in a given situation or context.

To take full advantage of future complex service offerings, even on limited client devices, and to handle the growing variety of applications, this cooperation is researching into advanced profiling techniques, semantically enriched service descriptions and the (semi-) automatic discovery, composition and execution of services. This research effort is largely motivated by the currently emerging Web Service paradigm and its proposed implementation and language standards, e.g. OWL-S, driven by activities in the area of the so-called Semantic Web. Related activities in this field prepare the ground for a wide range of complex services that promise to be provisioned in a user-centered fashion and will have to be managed accordingly. Currently only limited support is provided for a user-centered or personalized discovery and selection of these services. However, with increasing number of competing services in a network, it is crucial that users are supported in selecting appropriate services that can be expected to fulfill their individual tasks and needs otherwise the usefulness of these services will stay questionable.
